Bad Dental Health Bites!
It’s not just about bad breath: periodontal disease results in tooth infections, loose teeth, problems eating, and mouth pain. Most pets show signs of dental disease by age three. Plaque and tartar build-up lead to inflammation of the gums and periodontal tissues, and bacteria entering the bloodstream from infection in the mouth can travel to distant organs such as the liver, kidneys, and lungs.
The way to fight it is the same way you care for your own teeth: at-home tooth brushing and regular dental exams and cleanings. Our staff is happy to show you how to brush your pet’s teeth, which helps prevent plaque and tartar build-up. It may also mean less frequent cleanings.
Is your pet less than cooperative about tooth-brushing? That’s ok—our vets can recommend a wide variety of products available in our hospital and our online pharmacy that will help keep your pet’s mouth healthier between dentals.
At Bay Animal Hospital, we offer full-service dental care for your pets including exams and cleanings as well as digital X-rays, extractions, and oral surgery in our state-of-the-art dental suite.
We recommend regular anesthetized dental cleanings. Anesthesia allows us to safely clean above and below the gumline, take x-rays of your pet’s teeth, and probe around each tooth to assess for bone loss, infection, broken or loose teeth, and other signs of oral disease. This type of comprehensive oral health assessment is not possible without anesthesia.
